Help Me Choose a New Website Design

Okay, everybody. These are the mock ups for my new historical website. (The pen name, and possibly the fonts will change.) I love the colors on #2, but it might be a little too sexy for a website that will market LILY OF THE NILE in which my heroine is eleven years old. I also love the ethereal nature of #1, but maybe it’s too muted and dull? I dunno. What do you think?

I think you are right about #2 being too sexy for an 11 year old heroine. Could you swap the figure from #1 into #2? I love the wall of hieroglyphics and the colors of #2, if we can just clothe the woman….

  2. Alexia Reed Says:

    LOVE the second one!

  3. Stephanie Draven Says:

Yeah. I should mention that the series does get sexier after the first book. The sequel is pretty hot, but I’m thinking maybe a more generic website might be better than tailoring it to a specific book. I don’t know!

  4. Stephanie Draven Says:

Ahahaha. If we can just clothe the woman. That’s fabulous.

  5. Kathy Affeldt Says:

I agree with Christi — put the girl from the first one into the second one. I love the wall of hieroglyphs, too, and the colors in the second one. But you are right about making it more generic, than tailoring it to one particular book. Any particular region you write about? Middle Eastern? Egyptian (besides this one?). I write mostly Scottish, so I have a Scottish theme for my website. Try to get that ancient historical feel.

  6. Stephanie Draven Says:

Both the 1st and 2nd books of this series are set in a more Roman setting rather than Egyptian, but there’s a lot of Egyptian magic going on, so it is appropriate. My next books will probably go the route of ancient Greece, but maybe by then I’ll want a redesign. I don’t know.

  7. Leah Says:

If she were older, I would definitely have selected #2 because I like it better. But seeing as she’s not, #1 is probably the best choice.

  8. Janet Says:

I love #2,.. but if you view #1 without seeing #2 below, it is also beautiful. And she is too naked for an 11 year old. As pretty as it is, you’d catch a ton of flak, and that’s not the publicity you’d want.

  9. bitingback Says:

I think the first one is more suited to the concept in general, and looks better full screened. While I liked the hieroglyphics, they leave me feeling as though two unrelated images are combined. The first one has a more unified feeling.

  10. bitingback Says:

Also, I think your name looks better and stands out more against number one. And you are what this is all about!

  11. Jon Says:

    Definitely #2. It grabs.

  12. Laura Thomson Says:

I like the right part (the figure) of the top one, and the left part (the text and hieroglyphics) of the second one. Both really nice though.

  13. E Says:

I very much prefer #1. I think the colors are a lot more appealing.

  14. Cambria Dillon Says:

I think #1 conveys a more mysterious and mystical feel. Plus I think your name stands out more with the colors. The second one is nice as well but it looks like your name is competing with all the other things going on.

  15. Jamie Michele Says:

Both are compelling, so you’re off to a good start with whoever is designing this for you.

I like the font treatment and wall of glyphs in #2, but have to agree with the others about the girl’s lack of clothing. Too little for an eleven year old. But in #1, there’s no powerful, cohesive color theme and your name gets a little bit lost, even though it’s in a brighter color than it is in #2. I prefer the font in #2 over #1.

Good luck! I’m sure it’ll be lovely, whichever way you go.

  16. Laurel Wanrow Says:

    Hey Steph,
I agree about the age of the girl, but was also thinking more of the colors. #1 seems to blend better with your purplish background and lettering. I also feel she’s searching for something in a mysterious place in #1. The lettering is beautiful in both. I do love those hieroglyphics, tho- save it for your adult books?

  17. Isabelle Santiago Says:

While I agree that #2 is dynamic and sexy and the coloring is striking, there is something beautiful and mysterious about #1. I was drawn to that one first, actually, because of the fog and the font and the beautiful girl in the dress. I really like it and think it can work for multiple historical worlds… not just Roman/Greek or Egyptian, so in that way… it gives you variety.

  18. Diana Peterfreund Says:

#1 is definitely prettier, but there’s something wrong with the scale of the name text. It needs to be bigger, or maybe a different font.

#2 looks like ebook erotica to me. #1 is “classier.”

site bookmarked and digged, I’ll post a feedback on my profile asap

  20. Naomi Says:

I like the colours of the second and the figure from the first. Is there a mash-up option available?
