Okay, everybody. These are the mock ups for my new historical website. (The pen name, and possibly the fonts will change.) I love the colors on #2, but it might be a little too sexy for a website that will market LILY OF THE NILE in which my heroine is eleven years old. I also love the ethereal nature of #1, but maybe it's too muted and dull? I dunno. What do you think?

This article from The Onion has me howling with laughter. Because I've authored a love story about a gorgon for HQN, I'm incredibly tickled by this and grateful to my friend and fellow writer Tom Doyle for pointing it out. A few months ago, The Onion also did a skit about the Minotaur, so I think somebody over there may have a classical mythology fetish!

If you need a laugh, I advise that you read the whole article, but just this opening salvo cracked me up:

Well, another wasted evening, another potential "Mr. Right" walking out of my life. I guess I should be used to it by now, because it's just so typical: Men will talk all day about how much they value ambition and intelligence in a partner, but when they finally meet a successful, educated gorgon, all of a sudden they head for the hills.

Needless to say, a smart and sophisticated companion isn't what these men are actually looking for. No, what they really want is some easily impressed mortal who'll laugh at all their jokes. Someone who won't challenge their minds or disagree with their opinions. Someone who lacks a visage so terrifying it turns all beholders into solid stone.

I suppose I could giggle, bat my eyes, and absent-mindedly twirl a fanged, hissing serpent around my fingers—but that's not who I am.

I'm always looking at things and wondering if they would make a good cover. Using Stumble-Upon today I fell over these photographs which blew me away and I thought I'd share. I love everything about these photos.

They are staged so beautifully, and everything about them reads like the story of some fabulously interesting ancient woman. My brother-in-law is trying to convince me that my next historical novel should be about empress Theodora and I imagine that these photos could be very inspiring to a cover artist.

I've been saying for a while that I think the more inventive and creative writing in the industry is happening on the erotica end of the scale. Megan Hart, one of the most literary writers in th genre, has been pushing that envelope with deep and thoughtful novels that happen to center around sexual topics.

My editor at Berkley is quoted in this very interesting article in Publisher's Weekly:

Relationship-centered erotica is very important at Berkley, where executive editor Cindy Hwang notes that although the imprint has only been publishing its Heat line since 2005, “In that short period of time, we’ve really seen the erotic romance take off. This isn’t to say these books aren’t as sexy as other erotica—just that there’s an emphasis on the character development and emotional connection between the characters.” Hwang cites Emma Holly’s September Fairyville as a great example of a book that combines intense emotional connections with “envelope-pushing sexuality.”

What, might you ask, does a baby elephant have to do with my work as an author? Well, I'm so glad you asked. As it turns out, elephants figure into some of the research I'm doing for my sequel to LILY OF THE NILE (my forthcoming book from Berkley about Cleopatra's Daughter, Selene, to be released January 2011).

The guy pictured above is an Indian elephant, which is a smaller breed than the more well-known Ethiopian Elephant (now known as the African Elephant). There used to be a third kind.

The elephants that Hannibal took over the Alps were North African elephants, now extinct, but Cleopatra Selene's husband Juba wrote extensively about the species and described it as having an uncanny intelligence.

Okay, so that gave me my excuse to post an adorable baby animal picture!

Why Are Angels the New Trend in Spec Fic?

I suspect Supernatural might have something to do with this, but it looks like the new trend is going to be angels. I personally find them more fascinating than vampires, but maybe that's just because of a certain angel in a trench coat. What interests me most about this is the socio-political implications:

"As we understand it, angel books are appealing to the same people who were reading so-called misery memoirs," says Michelle Pilley, MD and publisher of Hay House, which publishes angelic bestsellers by Jacky Newcomb and Doreen Virtue.

Tales of tragic childhoods were big sellers in recent years, but since the recession sales of the genre have dropped dramatically. According to supermarkets, where misery memoirs have always sold strongly, the same readers have turned to angels instead.

These angel books particularly appeal to people who do not feel a connection to traditional religion. "I think people find (angels) very approachable," says Pilley.

"They're very accessible. People study the different archangels and their different attributes, and they feel they can have a direct personal connection to these angels in a way they may not be able to do with a God. You have personal (guardian) angels, who are (devoted to) you as an individual, and people without strong religious faith may not feel God has such a personal interest."
