New Ruins and the Mayan Collapse

El CastilloOkay, so it’s not just ancient Greek civilization that interests me. I confess to a certain preference for the history and lore of Western classics, but a few years ago, I had one of the most incredible experiences of my life attempting to climb the ruins at Xunantunich, in Belize. Ever since then, I’ve been fascinated by the the ancient Mayan civilization.

I stumbled across this news article today, explaining how mysterious ruins that they’ve found in the hills points to a catastrophic and sudden collapse of the Mayan Empire rather than a slow decline. I can’t wait to see what else they’ll find!

A Challenge to My Home Town of Greece New York

Okay, so I always thought I had to go to Greece to see the Parthenon, but apparently not. There’s a shiny replica in…wait for it…Nashville, TN.

Oh, you already knew this, you say? Well, I was apparently the last to know. And it makes no sense to me. According to the Examiner, Nashville is “The Athens of the South.” Having never equated the home of The Grand Ole Oprey with the cradle of western democracy, this gives me pause, but it’s on the internet, so it must be true.

Having grown up in Greece, NY, I feel as if my hometown has failed to live up to its promise. I don’t remember any pillars at Greece Athena High School. I do remember some kind of flashy diner on Mount Read Road with a Greek motif, but it all seems pretty lame next to the PARTHENON. Some might say that my paranormal romance series for Silhouette Nocturne, which weaves ancient Greek myths into modern day love stories might be monumental accomplishment enough for my hometown, but those people are wrong. (And I would like to meet them.)

I hereby challenge my hometown to outdo Nashville–and that huge church that’s shaped like a trireme with a battering ram on the front doesn’t count. A town called Greece needs a Colossus, or at least some awesome bronzed statuary. Maybe a decadent banquet hall, or a classical agora. Something, anything, to take away the shame at having been bested by Nashville Tenessee…

The Political Power of Historical Romance

I write paranormal romance because speculative fiction can illuminate the ordinary in extraordinary ways. However, I love historical fiction because it’s a mirror reflection of that same idea. By showing us history through the ordinary eyes of a participant, historical fiction is able to cast a very bright light on the extraordinary evils of times past, all while putting the advances of our own time into perspective.

A good example of this is Wideacre, Philippa Gregory’s novel. It teaches us more about land use than any of us would probably be willing to learn in a text book, and has a great deal to say about women’s rights and modern day unions without ever uttering a word about them. While you’re reading Wideacre, you don’t know that you’re learning anything–you’re just immersed in a powerful story. But one could hardly categorize her novel as a romance.

Historical romance novels–particularly Regency romances–are criticized for glorifying a time of vast gender, race and class inequity. But I think its important to understand that truths are discovered in a deeper place than someone simply telling us that discrimination is wrong. Insofar as is possible, historical fiction allows us to see the problems in antiquated societies for ourselves. Outside of a role-playing game, historicals may be the only way for people to experience, in a safe environment, the political realities of a not-so-entirely-distant time.

The critics may ask how anyone can learn anything from a historical romance novel when the ending is so decidedly happy and the heroine so obviously content with her lot in life. I think it’s because the heroine is a part of that antiquated society, and perhaps even happily so, that she may be more politically influential than a character who is miserable in his or her oppression. Certainly, there’s a place of honor for fiction like that too–Ibsen’s Doll House comes to mind–but modern readers may meet such fiction with more resistance.

People throw up walls against other people’s suffering–perhaps in an effort to protect themselves, perhaps out of a notion of collective guilt, or perhaps because they just want to be entertained. The historical romance entertains and bypasses those internal reader walls. Our heroine may not even perceive an evil of her time to be evil, but that doesn’t mean the modern-day reader hasn’t learned anything.

Take Julia Quinn’s excellent Bridgerton series. The Bridgertons are a privileged group who all find their happy endings, but you can’t come away from the series without a better understanding of how society was starting to fracture and how the social rules hurt various underprivileged groups, including the otherwise delightfully happy heroines of the books.

Tessa Dare also tackles some class issues in her debut historical novel, Goddess of the Hunt. She does so a little more overtly than one might otherwise expect, but having gained her readers’ trust in the first half of the book, she doesn’t shy away from using the political power of her historical pen. That’s something to be admired.

In a time when screaming matches on television pervade our national discourse, and people are more entrenched than ever in their political points-of-view, an exploration of history is a powerful and subversive thing. To know where we should go from here, it’s useful to know where we’ve been. Kudos to historical romance writers for blazing that path.

Tessa Dare: Believe the Hype

Although Regency Historical Romances are not normally my cup of tea, there’s a special place in my heart for Julia Quinn and now for newcomer Tessa Dare.

I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Dare at the recent Romance Writers of America convention in DC. A lot of hype surrounds her debut because she reportedly received a six figure book deal. Now that I’ve read Goddess of the Hunt, it’s my opinion that Tessa Dare earned every penny.

The heroine of Goddess of the Hunt is not your typical plucky Regency sweetheart. No, Tessa Dare’s heroine is just this side of being a harlot–and I quite adored her. The hero would otherwise be your garden variety dark-and-brooding-landed-gentry, but his grudging delight with the heroine’s quirky antics and unexpectedly lusty nature totally endeared him to me.

Goddess of the Hunt is funny and fun. It isn’t literary fiction and it won’t force you to ponder the secrets of the universe. There are also some slow moving bits (the intrusion of class politics in the latter half slammed the brakes on an otherwise quick read) and I had the distinct impression that I’d picked up a book in the middle of a series rather than the first of a series. But overall, this novel was a delight, start to finish.

In fact, Tessa Dare has an authorial voice of a much more experienced writer and I found it difficult to put the book down. If you’re looking for some sweet summer reading that will make you smirk, and smile, and occasionally feel scandalized, this may be the book for you.
